Lyttelton Gasworks Ready To Close
An elderly Lyttelton woman will face a great change next week when the Lyttelton gasworks shut Her house has been completely dependent on gas, even for lighting. Her case has caused the Lyttelton Borough Council the greatest concern in the preparation for a switch to electric power, but it has been met, along with about 500 others.
The Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett) said yesterday that the change had gone smoothly, even more smoothly than had been expected, and everything was now ready fot
the works to close on March 31. The New Zealand Gas Council had accepted the council’s scale of compensation, he said, and consumers generally were satisfied. Mr Collett Said gas would be pumped through the mains to clear them so there would be no possible danger when the supply ceased. His council would be pleased to see the end of the gas undertaking, which had been losing money steadily for years, he said. The loss last year was more than £5OOO. Once the initial compensation had been met the borough would be relieved of a big financial burden.
