Difficult Journey
The Chief Justice (Sir Richard Wild) had to take a roundabout route to get to Greymouth to preside over the Supreme Court session this week. The plane in which he was to have travelled from Wellington to Hokitika on Monday could not leave Rongatai airport. Sir Richard Wild decided to catch the first plane to Christchurch from where he travelled by car to Greymouth. Arriving at the courthouse just before 5 p.m., he found counsel waiting for divorce case hearings. Sir Richard Wild agreed to proceed with the business which he had cleared by 5.50 p.m.— (F.0.0.R.) Appeal Total In spite of poor weather, the annual street appeal conducted by the Christchurch Children’s Homes Appeal Trust Board last week raised $l9OO. Last year the board raised $2214. Collectors in suburban shopping centres raised $B4O. New Brighton and Northlands shopping centres were the most profitable. Tolls Closed The tolls service at the Christchurch Post Office was closed for 10 minutes at 11 a.m. yesterday. Two engines attended a false alarm in the tolls fire alarm and the service was discontinued until the brigade was satisfied there was no fire.
