Otago Mer At Nelson
(N.Z. Freu Anoeiauon)
NELSON, March 12. Fifteen waterside workers from Port Chalmers had their first day today on the Ne'son waterfront. They worked alongside Nelson union men loading fruit for Britain and logs for Japan. The watersiders are In Nelson on a trial scheme to gb e relief to the labour situation at Port Chalmers, which has lost its meat and associated general cargoes to Timaru and Bluff.
The secretary of the Nelson Union (Mr P. Belton) said today the scheme would be reviewed after six weeks, but depending on the amount of work available, could continue to the end of May. Some of the Port Chalmers men had been without work on that waterfront for about three months, he said. It was envisaged the scheme might be extended in the future so that other ports needing extra union men during the peak of their seasons could draw on Port Chalmers labour.
