Heat Blinds River Fish

(N.Z. Preu Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, March 13.

Fish in the rivers in the East Gippsland region of Victoria are going blind because of the continuing drought. Parasites are attacking the fish, which are now thin and lazy, their eyes covered by a white film. Experts say low water levels and high temperatures are to blame. Bream, mullet and Gippsland perch are particularly affected by the parasites, which are breeding in thousands in the warm water.
