Record Attempt By Halwes
(N.Z. Press Association)
SYDNEY. The New South Wales Trotting Club committee will approach Messrs A. Wesley and C. Williams. owners of Halwes, with an offer for the champion to try for a new mile record in a specially paced time trial at Harold Park. No date has been mentioned in preliminary talks, but Mr L. Smith, the trotting club manager, hopes to arrange a record attempt within the next few weeks. Halwes has few fields left to conquer after his Australian record of Imin 58 3-ssec in winning the Miracle Mile, but a special time trial would give him the opportunity of becoming the world’s fastest pacer on a half-mile track. The present world record for a mile on a half-mile circuit is held by a former American champion, Bret Hanover, which clocked Imin 57sec in 1966. K. Newman, driver of Halwes, is convinced that the Tasmanian pacer could at least equal this time with the assistance of a galloping pacemaker.
