OLD RECORD GOES
The oldest record in New Zealand cycling was broken by 16.3 sec by the national representative, B. G. Stockwell, at English Park last evening. Stockwell rode the unpaced three miles event in 6min 19sec to eclipse the time of R. B. Hodkinson (Auckland), set in 1949 —three weeks before Stockwell was born. Although in conditions unsuitable for pursuit riding, Stockwell also went close to D. A. Comparini’s New Zealand junior pursuit record. The Commonwealth Games rider covered 4000 metres in smin 12sec two years ago and Stockwell was only ( .Bsec slower. His time broke by 4sec the Canterbury junior record, held by himself and S. J. Stephen. During his pursuit ride, Stockwell went through the one mile in 2min 4.2 sec. I.Bsec inside the record, ' but there were no official stop-watches on this mark. Stockwell started with a quarter-mile in 31.5 sec, followed by a 29.55ec lap. His next fastest lap was an even 31sec, and he covered the quarter-miles in an average of 31.6 sec.
