Cobden People Discuss “Mystery Aeroplane”
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, March 12. Cobden residents today are discussing a “mystery aeroplane” heard over the Greymouth suburb a few minutes before midnight yesterday. The Civil Aviation Department says there was no aircraft in the area at the time. “That suggests we do not know what we are talking about,” a Cobden storekeeper, Mr E. Belcher, said today. Mr Belcher said he heard what sounded like a multiengined aircraft flying over Cobden. “It was creating a terrific
roar and it seemed to be flying very low. I ran outside, as I was concerned at the flying level and thought it might not clear the hill.” The sky was pitch black, and it was drizzling. Mr Belcher said that he and his wife heard the aircraft for several minutes. Its path appeared to be up the Grey Valley. Several of his customers also heard it. “I have heard thousands of planes in my time, but nothing like this before,” said Mr Belcher. “It wasn’t a jet. It sounded like a multiengined aircraft,”
