Fiery Protest Planned

The Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants wants to burn an effigy of the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) on the Port Hills in protest against the laying-off of men over 65. It has written to the Heathcote County Council seeking permission to light a fire. The president of the branch (Mr T. M. Sweeney) said that if permission was refused the society would burn the effigy in the Waimakariri river-bed.

The Heathcote County Clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) said yesterday that applications to light fires on the Port Hills were generally dealt with by the council’s fire officer. Because of the dry conditions, fires on the hills had been prohibited by county and borough councils. The branch will ask other branches to follow its lead.
