BAYWAY FIT

Birchwood Candidate

“The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. Bayway, which has not raced since the Tapanui meeting in December, was one of the most impressive trialists at Invercargill yesterday when candidates for the Birchwood meeting on Saturday attracted attention.

The trestles were 20ft out on the course proper which was holding, but carrying a good sole of grass. If there is no more rain it should provide fine autumn going on Saturday. Bayway, which was the first to work, had Drum Call for a companion over half a mile in 55 4-ssec, quickening a little for the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec.

The two-year-olds. Foxgold and Western Match, finished on terms at the end of three furlongs in 43 3-ssec, the last two in 28 2-ssec.

Working alone. Waterfront impressed by the manner in which he completed three furlongs in 42sec, the last two in 28sec. He has drawn favourably in the Otautau Hack Handicap on Saturday.

The maidener, Derwent View, which was placed at the Gore meeting at Invercargill, was too good for Black Wonder and Just One over half a mile in 56sec. the last three in 42 l-ssec.

Bellaware. which is coming to hand nicely for Easter racing, was travelling easily alongside Just Belle at the end of half a mile in 55sec, the last three furlongs in 42 2-ssec.

Sea Belle, which raced disappointingly at Cromwell, was clear of Capasco after running six furlongs in 1:19, the last half in 55 4-ssec. Sea Belle’s more seasoned condition was evident over the last two furlongs.
