Dredge Sold For Scrap
The dredge Canterbury has been sold to Pacific Scrap, Ltd, of Auckland, by the Lyttelton Harbour Board and will be towed by the barge Mahala, leaving Lyttelton tomorrow.
The 1117-ton steam suction dredge was built in Renfrew, Scotland, in 1911, and began work in Lyttelton in 1912. It was in continuous service until late last year, when it was laid up and advertised for sale. The board was unable to attract suitable offers to buy the dredge to continue working.
Lyttelton residents will not be sorry to see the last of the vessel. When a strong wind blew housewives were said to rush out to bring in clothes as soon as they saw the Canterbury leave port, as it was a prolific smoke-producer.
