LARGE-PRINT BOOKS

City Librarian Appeals

The Christchurch City Librarian (Mr R. N. O’Reilly) yesterday appealed to persons with aged parents, to Churches, and to welfare organisations associated with the aged to make known the availability of large-print books at the Canterbury Public Library and suburban libraries. “The real problem is getting them info the hands of the thousands of old people of the city who do not know about them,” Mr O’Reilly said. Many of these would not read “The Press” interview with Mr F. A. Thorpe, publisher of the Ulverscroft large-print books, simply because the newspaper type was too small for them.

Mr O’Reilly said the Canterbury Public Library held the complete range of Ulverscroft titles, which were available without charge to city borrowers who had difficulty in reading ordinary printing. It also had a number of American large-print publications. It circulated many largeprint titles through the suburban libraries.

“The library staff would be pleased to co-operate with organisations and individuals who could undertake to change, library books for those unable to use the library themselves; but it would also be helpful if those coming into contact with active old people who had difficulty in reading would let them know of the services that the city provides through its libraries,” said Mr O’Reilly.
