Pigmeat Prices

Sir, —For the last four years pig farmers have been persuaded to convert to meal feeding through a lack of skim milk and other feeds. Last year, under the auspices of the Pig Producers’ Council, a survey on meal feeding ! costs was taken out. On those figures, which included partial grazing, a profit of $2 an 801 b dressed porker could reasonably be expected. With the recent drop of 2} cents per lb, the profit is reduced to nil on all meal feeding. There may be an over-supply of pigmeats in Canterbury, but I cannot be convinced that the same applies over the whole country. What is the Pig Producers’ Council going to do about the situation? Is the council as dead and useless as it seems?— Yours, etc., ALSO MEAL FEEDER. February 1, 1968.
