Karamea-Nelson Road

Sir,—The statement by the chief of the South Island Publicity Association calls for some comment He stated: "Wangapeka is the shortest, cheapest »nd requires the least bridging. However, it opens up no new country and is over high country and it is thought it would pose many engineering problems and would be difficult to keep open.” If the first portion of his statement is correct why add the last? Second: “The Heaphy Track would not pose the same engineering problems and would be a scenic route through country in need of opening up.” May I point out

that his second proposal traverses country higher than his first and bisects the highest rainfall area in New Zealand and could be classed as the toughest new roading project undertaken in the South Island? It would open up country but for no purpose. Perhaps Mr Foate would re-assess this very important project and make a further statement.—Yours, etc., ROSS L. HIGGINS. Wakefield, February 5, 1968.
