WAITANGI MARAE
Expansion Planned r.v.Z. Fran Auociation) WHANGAREL Feb. 5. The Waitangi national niarae will be developed in stages, beginning with upgrading and possible rebuilding of the traditional meeting house and the building of a comprehensive public amenities and accommodation complex.
A tentative plan to build a sound shell surrounded by water, swimming pool, low rent accommodation, a restaurant and other public amenities was adopted in principle by the Waitangi National Marae Board at its first annual meeting at Waitangi yesterday. The board was to meet the Bay of Islands County Clerk (Mr M. M. Plowright) today to discuss the plan and ensure that it would not conflict with the council's planning for the area. The plan was formed after a suggestion from the chairman of the boards subcommittee (Dr N. M. Paewai) that the marae grounds could be used to provide amenities which would be selfsupporting.
