Marlborough Holds Cup
(N.Z. Press Association) BLENHEIM.
Marlborough retained the Hawke Cup with a fine display of stubborn batting against Rangitikei. It was Marlborough’s first defence of the trophy. The odds were stacked against Marlborough after the first day of the three-day match when Rangitikei compiled a useful 336. Rain washed out play on Saturday morning and there was insufficient time left for the holder to attempt an outright win. Marlborough batted steadily to be 308 for seven at stumps. W. Garrod made 72 and L. Sparks 60 not out.
