Halwes Impressive At Pukekohe

AUCKLAND. The Tasmanian champion. Halwes, attracted attention at Pukekohe yesterday, when he was given a hoppled workout over a mile and a half. After covering the distance comfortably in 3min 24 4-ssec, he sprinted three furlongs. He worked right-handed and according to his driver, A. Wesley, handled the bends well. Wesley trains Halwes and races hii.i in partnership with Mr C. Williams, a retired 81-year-old baker.

Halwes will have his final fast pre-championships wor’r-out tomorrow

He will be handled by his race-night driver, K. Newman, who will fly from Sydney tonight. Newman is the leading driver in Sydney. His last five drives behind Halwes have produced four firsts and a second Other championship candidates which were hoppled up are Governor Frost, Superior Chief, Aka Eden and Amend. The trotters, Apollo and King's Cord, did sound work. Governor Frost IGadsby) went smoothly over .13 furlongs in 3min 44 2-ssec. He increased speed going into the last round and covered the final half-mile in Imin 6 l-ssec, and the last quarter in 32 3-ssec. Aka Eden (Bayer) had no difficulty beating Dover Eden (Hughes) and Eden’s Charm (Green) over two miles. The time was a slack 4min 55sec, but the last quarter was sprinted smartly in 31 4-ssec. Superior Chief (Goodall) worked with Milford Boy (R Purdon) and the three-year-old Thurber Scott (L. Purdon) Milford Boy made the pace, but Superior Chief finished strongly and they were on terms at the finish, with Thurber Scott several lengths away, after a mile and a half in 3min 22 l-ssec. The last half-mile was done in Imiri 2sec and the quarter in 30 2-ssec.

LIGHT WORK The eight Australian horses at Alexandra Park were given

only light work. Only two worked at speed—the trotters. Corop McElwin, and Delvin Dancer. But they sprinted only the last half-mile of their work.

Delvin Dancer recorded Imin Ssec and Corop McElwin Imin 7 4-ssec.

Tobias did not have a good chance of competing In the championships, his trainer. J Butcher, said yesterday. The horse was sore after working two miles in 4min 45sec on Butcher’s track at Pukekohe" yesterday. “I have had him in the saltwater each morning since he raced at the matinee at Alexandra Park last Saturday, but I do not think It is making much difference.’’ said. Butcher. "The near front leg, which gave all the trouble before, seems all right. It is the off one that Is worrying me now." Butcher said he would delay a decision about the championships until he felt he had no option but to withdraw the horse.
