SEALING IN PROGRESS
Road To Arthur’s Pass
A further two miles of the Christchurch - Arthur’s Pass Road is now being sealed by the Ministry of Works at a cost of $35,000. The resident engineer (Mr W. A. Scott) said yesterday that when the work was completed there would be only 22 miles of unsealed road between Christchurch and the Thomas River.
Ministry of Works staff, with hired equipment, are doing the work between Broad stream and Bruce stream. Mr Scott said the rest of the road would be sealed progressively as money became available. Present indications were that allocations would not be more than last year. Tenders are now being called for the second sealing of the northern motorway between' the Belfast Hotel and Neeves Road, a distance of about two miles. Work will start next week on the Ohoka Road underpass. The Payne Construction Company has the contract worth more than $lOO,OOO.
