WAGE-HEARING DATE

An application for a new general wage order lodged on December 12 by the Federation of Labour will be heard by the Arbitration Court on Tuesday, March 12, says a Press Association message from Wellington.

An increase of 7.6 per cent in the minimum wage rate is being sought. The date was set by the Court yesterday morning after discussions between the president of the Federation of Labour Mr T. E. Skinner (right, above), the Employers’ Federation’s executive director, Mr P. J. Luxford (left), and the F.O.L.’s research officer Mr D. B. McDonald (centre). The picture was taken outside the Arbitration Court after the hearing was arranged. Mr Skinner said later that the national executive of the F.O.L. would be meeting all day today to consider the wage claim application and all other matters relating to New Zealand’s economy. "We will be considering whether our claim should be amended before the hearing. This will depend on the figures and information available to us. At this stage it appears no amendment to our claim will be necessary,” he said.
