Less U.S. Aid
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Feb. 6. The United States held out no hope today of increased American aid to the world’s poorer nations in the immediate future. The United States Undersecretary of State (Mr Eugene Rostow) told the second United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in New Delhi that America’s balance-of-payments problem affected her aid programmes. But, he added, the United States would play its part in whatever programme for replenishing the funds of the International Development Association commanded general support. Earlier, France had offered to increase her aid to developing countries by an unspecified amount Mr Michel Debre, the French Minister of Finance and Economy, told the conference that aid for developing countries must come from the income of developed nations, “where public opinion must recognise that this is a sacrifice which must be made in the name of international solidarity.”
