Manufacturers’ Mission To South Africa

The manager of the New Zealand trade mission to Africa (Mr W. G. Kerslake) visited Christchurch yesterday to have talks with manufacturers likely to go on the mission, which Will leave oh April 18. land goods. The Itinerary of the mission, he said, included Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban,. Nairobi and Mombasa. The aims of the mission were to sell and to survey. New Zealand’s need to expand sales was a matter of top priority and a challenge to all manufacturers.

The mission is being orga-nised-fay the. New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. Mr Kerslake said that for three ytors the federation’s export .development programmehad been concentrated in the Pacific basin. Worth-while progress had been- made within this perimeter, and it was now intended to move into new markets. South and East Africa had been selected for the first trade mission for 1968. Accommodation during the mission, including meals and incidentals, he skid, should not exceed $24 to $3O a day. Among the substantial imports of South Africa Were dairy products and eggs, wood, timber and cork, chemicals, pharmaceutical products, leather, paper, paperboard, textile yarn, fabrics, and metal products. Kenya also had a wide range of imports, including fruit and vegetables, beverages and tobacco, chemicals, insecticides, disinfectants and many made-up articles. Mr Kerslake yesterday morning had talks with the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers* Association (Mr A. S. Farrar), the member of * Parliament for St Albans (Mr H. J. Walker), and the director of the association (Mr R. T. Alston).
