JACK’S PASS PLANTING
ExtensiouOf Forest
The first half of a forest extension programme for the Hanmer Springs State Forest will be completed this winter with the planting of 175 acres on the east side of. Jack's Pass fbove the Canterbury Automobile Association’s motor camp. Some preparation for the planting of the west side in 1969 has also been done. Manuka, gorse and broom on the east slopes of the pass below the New Zealand Electricity Department’s transmission line access road has been burnt off and stands of Pinus pinaster bulldozed into windrows for burning. The slopes have been disced for planting in radiate, ponderosa and Corsican pine, and Douglas fir. The senior forester in Christchurch for the Canterbury conservancy (Mr H. H. Wilson) said yesterday that additional low - .growing species would be planted as a back-drop for the camping ground. They would be chosen for their aesthetic value, and planted so that they could cast as little shade as possible on the camp. The west slopes of the pass have recently been aerial sprayed to cure the growth for burning. The arable land will later be disced, and fresh growth on the nonarable land sprayed again to kill before planting next year?
