TIMARU WOOL DEARER
(New Zealand Press Association)
TIMARU, February 5.
Compared with last month’s Christchurch sale Merinos were generally 5 per cent dearer at the Timaru wool sale today, says the official report.
The Timaru offiering comprised 29,042 bales. The wools were drawn from all parts of South Canterbury and Ashburton County. The selection was mostly
crossbred fleece, a fair offering of halfbred wools and a larger than usual selection of lamb fleece.
The balance was made up of shorn hoggets, a few Merino lines and woolly hoggets and the usual oddments. Dry Season
It was not one of South Canterbury’s best clips, the dry season having taken its toll in the way of dust, lack of growth and weakness of staple. The oddment wools, although mostly of good colour, contained an undesirable proportion of short wools. The lamb fleeces were well grown but were coarser than those produced in former seasons. Compared with the recent Invercargill sale, crossbred fleece and skirtings were firm with lamb wool inclined in sellers’ favour. Good Competition Compared with last month’s Christchurch sale, Merinos were generally 5 per cent dearer. Good style halfbreds improved by 2) per cent and ordinary styles were generally firm. “There was good general
competition; the bulk of the buying came from the Continent with some support from East Europe. Japan and local mills operated on suitable fine wools. Bradford representatives bought sparingly,” said the report
