“HUNGER TRAIL” Asian Meal To Open C.O.R.S.O. Appeal
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 5. In an attempt to raise a cent for every inch of the highway between North Cape and Bluff, C.0.R.5.0. will officially launch its 1968 “hunger trail” tomorrow.
In Wellington a special function to mark the commencement of the project wiU be held at C.0.R.5.0. headquarters. 1 The Prime Minister (Mr
Holyoake), the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt), Sir Walter Nash, the Mayor of Wellington (Sir Francis Kitts), Cabinet Ministers, representatives of the Dairy Board, and other prominent citizens will have an Asian meal at an austerity luncheon.
Boiled rice, curry, lentils, and a glass of water represent the total menu. A spokesman for C.0.R.5.0. said that this differed from a typical Asian meal only in that the water would be chlorinated. A spokesman said it was not the intention to have an unbroken trail of coins from the north of the country to the south, but here and there coin trails would be established to help represent the distance covered.
Money would be gathered in various ways throughout the year, and increases in the sum collected would represent a closing gap between North Cape and Bluff on a cent-per-inch basis.
