Warning On Carp

(N.Z. Press Association)

NAPIER, Feb. 5.

Introduction of carp to New Zealand lakes could prove “too successful,’’ according to an American professor of wildlife management, Dr C. Yocom.

Dr Yocom, from Humboldt University, California, said in ■Napier today that carp were regarded as “scrap” fish in the United States.

The flsL were creating problems by taking over many waterways. Dr Yocom was commenting on plans of the Hawke’s Bay Acclimatisation Society to introduce carp to Lake Tuttra to solve the problem of plankton bloom. The society has received permission in principle to import the carp, and is at present holding discussions with the Marine Department.
