Summer Gardens Of High Standard
“In view of the early summer the standard of the gardens was surprisingly excellent and reflects credit on the owners,” Mr E. W. Rodgers, of Christchurch, one of the judges of the Christchurch Beautifying Association’s annual summer garden competition, said after the judging at the week-end.
Mr Rodgers said that because of the high standard, judging in some cases had been quite difficult. In early all the gardens the harmony had been good, but the greatest weakness had been in the design and arrangement. There was a particularly pleasing number of entries in the new gardens, he said. The premier award for the best garden in the competition was won by Mr F. W. Green, of 7 Doreen Street. Mr Green also won the Herbert Cup for the best garden with a frontage not exceeding 60ft. The other judges, all of whom were from Christchurch, were Messrs J. Watling, L. J. Mitchell, J. A. Martin, K Marcussen, and D. Riach.
