Decision Reserved On Labourers’ Pay

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, February 5. The Court of Arbitration today reserved its decision on a wage claim application by the Federation of Labourers and Related Trades Industrial Association of Workers.

The federation is seeking increases in the basic rates of pay for labourers of up to $3 a week. Mr P. J. Luxford, representing respondent employers at the hearing, opposed the claim and made no counter offer.

“Costs would be affected by any increase and would place

further inhibitions on the industries involved and their ability to provide employment, and to undertake further tasks in present economic circumstances.”

Mr P. M. Butler, secretary of the federation, said members of the union were awaiting the Arbitration Court’s decision with keen interest. “We’ve shown from the facts that the construction industry is profitable and will continue to be profitable,” he said.
