COUNCIL FLATS
Inspection By Applicants
Nearly 50 applicants for apartments in the Christchurch City Council’s new block of flats in Salisbury Street inspected them on Saturday, together with many other visitors.
Mr D. R. Batten, the council’s housing supervisor, said that the applications would now be accepted, in order of priority, or declined. Several tenants would move in this week.
Called Airedale Court, the building contains 18 flats—l2 of them with two bedrooms, four with a double bedroom, and two with single bedrooms. Each has an electric range, and the building has three laundries. Garden strips are available for those who want them, and the City Council plans to plant the frontage with lawns, trees and shrubs. Rents range from $ll to $11.50 for one bedroom, and from $13.75 to $14.75 for two bedrooms. Mr Batten said the applicants so far represented a good cross-section of the community.
When the rehousing project is completed it will provide a total of 111 flats. A block of 24 has been occupied for 12 months, and two more blocks are expected to be completed by the end of the year. A further 42 flats will be provided next year.
Mr G. C. Mathias, of Tirau. has been awarded the Bank of New South Wales travel bursary to visit Australia for three months under the auspices of the Australian Rural Youth Movement. The bursary is awarded each year to enable an outstanding member of the New Zealand Young Farmers’ movement to visit Australia and study farming methods and techniques. Mr Mathis is farming on his father’s property.
