TROTTING Atanui Easily Wins Festival Cup

“Tha Prtst" Special Seroica DUNEDIN. Atariui, an emergency for the Inter-Dominion Championship series, which will open at Auckland next Saturday, gained a very easy win in the Dunedin Festival Cup at Forbury Park on Saturday night.

The chances of Atanui gaining a start at Auckland look remote. She has the eighth right of reentry in the event of scratchings being received up until 2 p.m. today.

“She will make the trip if we can get a start,” Atanui’s trainer, W. E. Lowe, said after the Dunedin Festival Cup. Lowe already has an InterDominion championship candidate, in Humphrey. Yankee Dandy broke at the start of the cup, and Space Cadet and Bass Strait were slow. Thunderina was the smartest out from Atanui, Glen Vale, Black Tulip, Bob Again and Soldier Gal. Glen Vale took over from Thunderina with a mile and a quarter to go. Black Tulip was third, then came Atanui (inner), Soldier Gal, Town Martial and Corwar. Alpine Lady, Stereo Scott, Bob Again and Fielder came next.

Alpine Lady made a big run three wide to be handy racing to the five furlongs, but she broke and checked Black Tulip, Fielder, and Bob Again. Corwar also received interference.

Corward improved along the inner from the half-mile and she was fifth behind Glen Vale, Thunderina, Stereo Scott and Atanui when the Geld straightened up. Atanui worked to the front early in the run home and came away to win comfortably by fourth lengths from Glen Vale, with Corwar running on well a length and a quarter back. Soldier Gal was only a neck back fourth. Thunderina failed to quicken and weakened to fifth. Stereo Scott, Bob Again and Bass Strait did best of the others.

The consistent Royal Fame received the run of the race in the Highcliff Handicap and came through on the inner when the pacemaker. Paranova drifted off the rails. Royal Fame won by half a length from Student, who was kept handy on the outside in the third line and finished well when brought out to challenge at the half-furlong. There was a length and a half to Paranova, and a nose to Spanaway, who shared the second line. Kimberly Kid, Celtic Gem and Merry Morning, who broke at the start, did best of the remainder.

The favourite, Newport Maid, broke hopelessly at the start. AIRWAYS HANDICAP S9OO ; 2:19 class; 2m. 7/9 ENNIS (5) It D. M. Kerr 1 3/2 JOHNNY KAWA (9) It J. W. Smolenskl 2 4/4 KIPPERS (10) It M.
