Labour Dept Changes
For the convenience of the public and greater departmental efficiency, employment inquiries at the Department of Labour’s Christchurch offices, in Manchester Street, will soon be dealt with on the first floor, instead of the third. Substantial alterations are being made and new counters installed. “After the change-over, people will have only one flight of stairs to climb, instead of three, and this will be appreciated particularly by elderly or physicallyhandicapped persons looking for jobs,” said the assistant superintendent of the Christchurch District (Mr M. J. Michael). “But the new arrangements
are not merely for the unemployed—it is a complete reorganisation of our office layout.” Mr Michael said that other clients of the department were becoming caught up in the congestion on the third floor, on which all senior officers, such as factory and safety inspectors, and the Training Within Industry service and the apprenticeship section would remain.
