Motor Racing TIMARU EVENTS POSTPONED

Dangerous track conditions caused by heavy rain forced the postponement of the Timaru national championship motor-race meeting at Timaru on Saturday.

It was eventually decided that the meeting would be held next Saturday. This was confirmed on Saturday evening by the secretary of the South Canterbury Car Club (Mr L Keenan).

The first race at the Levels circuit was set down to start at 10.30 a.m., and shortly before 10 a.m. club officials called drivers involved in the saloon and single-seater national championship races together to discuss the conditions.

The Motorsport Association stewards were unhappy about the conditions, the meeting was told. The circuit had much surface water on it, heavy rain was still falling, and the forecast was bad.

The greatest threat, however, was that the verge* of the track were so soft and soggy that It would be extremely dangerous for any car which left the track. Mr Keenan said spectators who had bought tickets but who were unable to attend next Saturday could post them to the club and obtain a refund.
