Fund’s Costs Rise

Because of devaluation and increases in the cost of living, the administration of the world-wide activities of the Save the Children Fund would cost £75,000 more this year, the president of the North Canterbury branch of the fund (Miss M. Havelaar) said at the monthly meeting of the branch yesterday.

Miss Havelaar said she had received this advice from London. “Many members cannot give more financial assistance but if we are to continue the work we have been doing, we must give more of ourselves,” said Miss Havelaar. Sir Colin Thornley, direc-tor-general of the fund in London, will attend the Dominion conference in Christchurch. In an effort to cut costs many of the usual guests would not be invited to the opening, said Miss Havelaar. Two public meetings would be held to allow members and organisations which support the fund to meet Sir Colin Thornley, said Miss Havelaar. AID IN VIETNAM The branch agreed to support a bed in the convalescent centre in Qui Nhon. The centre caters for children who are discharged from the overcrowded provincial hospitals as soon as they have been given surgical attention. Half the cost of $4OO to support a bed should come from general funds and half from members and friends, the meeting decided. Miss K. Davis, a membei of the North Canterbury branch, who was visiting Basutoland, had been favourably impressed by the spirit of co-operation between the Anglicans, the Roman Catholics and the native helpers, said Miss Havelaar. The representatives of the fund in Italy said in a letter

to Miss Havelaar that the fund had been first on the scene after the recent earthquake in Sicily. Working with the Royal Navy, the fund had planned two camps with full hospital facilities for the injured and the homeless. The branch decided to send $2OO when a request for help was received. Mrs A. A. Deans said 68 cases of clothing and toys had been shipped since the last meeting, most of them to Korea. Thirty-seven cases had been packed by Miss M. E. Osborne and the members of the Round Table had nailed them. DELEGATES CHOSEN The North Canterbury delegates to the Dominion conference of the fund in Christchurch in April will be Mrs M, Warren and Mrs C. B. Newton. The observers will be Mrs D. Rose and Mrs R. Stockwell. GIFT BY FIRM Calendars were not issued by the Christchuch firm, Crothall and Company, last year but the firm made a donation of more than $5OO to the fund with the money it would have spent on the cards, Miss Havelaar said. STALLS AT KAIAPOI Kaiapoi supporters of the Save the Children Fund had held two stalls to raise money, said the Kaiapoi representative (Mrs A. Peters). The first, held before Christ, mas had raised $2B, and the second, held last week, raised $72.
