Theodorakis Released

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ATHENS, Jan. 26. A council of magistrates in Athens last night ordered the release of the Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis whose lawyer says Theodorakis will probably be freed today or tomorrow. Theodorakis, who had been imprisoned on three charges of plotting to overthrow the military-backed regime, did not qualify for an amnesty announced at Christmas because his prison terms were longer than six months each. But last Monday the Court of Appeal dismissed one of the charges and reduced the sentences on the other two, making him eligible for the amnesty.

The council of magistrates accepted a recommendation by the Public Prosecutor, who described Theodorakis, aged 42, as “not dangerous to public security” a prerequisite for the release of political prisoners under the amnesty announced by the Prime Minister (Mr George Papadopoulos).
