Sales Records Broken

AU records were broken at the fortysecond National Yearling Sales, which ended at Trentham yesterday. Individual records were established last week. When the fourth selling day ended yesterday, buyers had spent $1,555,900, an average of $3870 for the 402 lots sold. The aggregate was $609,724 higher than the previous best and the average was up $BB5 on the previous record. The number of yearlings sold also increased. The sale reflected an outstanding vote of confidence by Australian buyers, who spent $1,230,700 on 228 yearlings. The average for the Australian purchases was $5409. Fifty-one yearlings were sold to other overseas countries, including several Asian countries, the United States, and South Africa. Mr C. Smith, who came from Durban to make purchases for South Africans, said yesterday that he felt confident that there would be many South African buyers at next year’s sale. “If the horses we bought in New Zealand in past years fulfil all the promises they have shown so far South Africans can hardly fail to be impressed by the quality of your horses,” Mr Smith said yesterday.
