Shots Fired Near Golfers
(N Z. Press Association) KAITAIA, Jan. 24. Golfers ducked for cover when shots were fired over the Kaitaia golf course on December 30, Mr R. M. Grant, S.M., was told today. One of the golfers. Sergeant B. J. Baker, officer in harge of the Kaitaia police district, dropped his club and climbed a sandhill to find 19-year-old Bryan Robert Gregory firing at tins filled with sand on the Ninety Mile Beach. Sergeant Baker prosecuted when Gregory, an apprentice carpenter from Oranga, near Onehunga, pleaded guilty in court today to discharging a firearm unlawfully. Gregory, who said he said he thought that the soft sand would stop the bullets, was fined $5O. The rifle was confiscated.
