GAOLED FOR THEFTS

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. Allan Ronald Smurthwaite, aged 20, unemployed, was sentenced by Mr H. Rosen, SM, at Auckland today to nine months imprisonment for stealing 36 cheques worth $3068.81 from the A.M.P. Insurance Society. Mr P. Salmon submitted that gambling was the cause of all Smurthwaite’s troubles. He had now repaid one third of the amount taken and his parents had repaid the balance.

The Magistrate said that the thefts had been committed by a carefully prepared scheme. The only appropriate sentence was a term of imprisonment.
