A “Give Way” Sign

Sir, —Recently a “Give W’ay” sign has been placed in Somerfield Street. In my opinion this sign is not only unnecessary but also in contradiction of traffic rules. The sign gives preference to traffic coming from Colombo Street, cutting through oncoming traffic, into Strickland Street, as well as to traffic, coming from Strickland Street and turning into Somerfield Street. 1 consider that after many years travelling (4 times a day), traffic in Somerfield Street is much heavier than in Strickland Street. If a “Give Way” sign was necessary at all, it certainly should not be placed where it is now.— Yours, etc., H.E.M. January 18, 1968. [The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “Arrangements of controls conforms with the patte r n of the network of principal roads. These streets represent the basic framework which carries the greatest traffic volumes and accounts for the majority of accidents. At this particular intersection the doubt which previously existed as to the right-hand rule has been eliminated.”]
