Print Exhibition
Sir, —I was dismayed to read in this morning’s issue of “The Press” that a private offer to stand the cost of presenting an exhibition of Paul Wunderlich prints was declined on the grounds that the prints would be of limited interest. Paul Wunderlich is an acclaimed post-war German artist specialising in lithographs which have won German, American and Japanese awards. In 1967 I saw his extensive Dusseldorf exhibition. I remember noticing in the catalogue that his work had been exhibited in Auckland in 1965, and thinking how extraordinarily “au fait” New Zealand must be becoming. The whole point of the lithograph is that this is intended to be popular form of art to to be distributed as widely as possible. It seems paradoxical that people should be prevented from seeing Wunderlich’s prints because they
have been pre-judged unpopular.—Yours, etc., PATRICIA McINTYRE. January 23, 1968. Sir, —Mr Baverstock is surely incorrect in saying that the German print exhibition would have been of limited interest. There is certainly a public ready to enjoy and purchase prints (1 understand some of the German prints were to have been for sale.) I saw an exhibition in Dunedin comprising work commissioned by the New Zealand Print Council. I believe this exhibition is not coming to the McDougall Gallery either. When the Paul Wunderlich retrospective exhibition was brought to New Zealand by the German Embassy, and a representative of the Print Council has offered to pay for its transport from Auckland himself, as well as assist in hanging it, it seems churlish to refuse these offers. As a ratepayer I am sorry to be deprived of the chance to see these prints.—Yours, etc., ALISON MOFFIT. January 23, 1968.
