End Of War At Sea
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 23. An early end to warfare at sea was predicted by a British naval historian, Dr Roger Charles Anderson, who arrived in the Gothic this morning on a five-week visit to New Zealand. Dr Anderson, past chairman of trustees of the Greenwich Maritime Museum and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, said that in his opinion there would be no world navies in the future. “Wars will be fought in the air,” he said.
The old days when a British warship visited some trouble spot, showed the flag and landed a few marines was gone. “This was gunboat diplomacy—and it is a thing of the past.” he said. Dr Anderson, who Is 84, served as a midshipman and sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy from 1905-1911 and a lieutenant and lieu-tenant-commander during the First World War. He is the author of many naval books. This is his fourth visit to New Zealand.
