Mail Begins To Move In Aust.
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 23. Australia’s postal strike is over and the Post Office has begun its task of moving the mountains of mail which banked up during the 12 days of dispute.
Postal workers began returning to work early this I afternoon, the last to agree to do so being those in New South Wales, a little after their counterparts in Western Australia. The New South Wales branch of the Amalgamated Postal Workers’ Union had expressed dissatisfaction yesterday with some of the terms of settlement, notably those bearing on wage claims, and decided to remain out for another 24 hours. This afternoon its members agreed to go back, but on the understanding that the State
■ executive of their union would ; hold a mass meeting of vandrivers within 10 days in the event of no fair settlement of r their claims. At first, the Postmasteri General (Mr A. Hulme) had laid down that the striking s workers would have to return I in a body, that there must be I a general return of all State - branches. s But a return on a State-for-i State basis was agreed at a 1 conference between the Gov- - ernment and the presidents of the Australian Council of s Trades Unions (Mr A. Monk) e and the A.P.W.U. (Mr G. b Slater).
