Schoolboys Lose To Touring Aust. XI
The Australian secondary schools’ cricket team scored the second outright win of its tour when, in its last match, it beat a Canterbury secondary schools’ XI by five wickets at Hagiey Oval, yesterday. Beginning the second day still 20 runs behind Canterbury's first innings and with three wickets left, Australia lost a quick wicket before the captain, D. Crow, made 41 not out in about 15 minutes. This enabled him to declare at 165 for eight wickets. He hit three sixes and three fours in a grand display of clean hitting. Canterbury managed only 123 in its second innings, leaving the Australians 138 minutes to make 100 to win. This they did, but after losing four wickets for only 42. Canterbury lost its Brabin Shield player, R. W. Fulton, at 15 but M. Fisher and R. Campbell took the total to 49 before Campbell was dismissed. Fisher made a patient 41 in 108 minutes. He hit four fours and looked in little trouble before being run out. B. Bhana batted with his usual restraint in making 26 before being brilliantly caught by P. Ryan. R. Davies bowled his mixture of leg-spinners to excellent effect taking three wickets for 15 off 12 overs; Crow was again effective. It looked as though the Australians would have an easy task but they lost two wickets at 25 both caught behind off the bowling of R. Hadlee within three balls. A steading fifth-wicket partnership by P. Nankivell and G. Stewart steered the team to victory about 5.40 p.m. Nankivell batted extremely well for his 51 not out in 112 minutes.
