Miss Shipston Scorns Cold For N.Z. Time

The happiest sight during a long, cold evening at the Centennial Pool last night was that of a beaming Tui Shipston bouncing out of the water after breaking yet another New Zealand record.

A startling sub-30sec second length was instrumental in her breaking the national women’s 110 yd freestyle mark set four years ago by Miss A. McMillan—by half a second. The time of Imin 4.Bsec was almost 2sec faster than Miss McMillan’s Canterbury record. The cold wind and the length of the programme might well have daunted even the hardiest competitor, but Miss Shipston and her fellow national champions, A. B Kindred and D. F. Gerrard, scorned the conditions to produce a run of excellent times. In spite of a back injury, Kindred broke his Canterbury quarter-mile freestyle record and was only I.3sec away from the national men’s and all-comers’ figures. Gerrard, who sat in the draughty stand for two hours and a half before his only race, was I.4sec outside his own New Zealand record for 110 yd butterfly. And Miss Shipston, without the benefit of competition, swam the fastest women’s 220 yards butterfly achieved in New Zealand. Her time of 2min 37.45ec was only Isee slower than the record put up by Miss H. L. Kerr while representing the Dominion at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica. 19 Records Miss Shipston has now broken 19 New Zealand records this season; she holds 10 of the 12 Canterbury seniot records. Last night’s session of the championships produced a further 12 centre records, making the' total so far 43 for the meeting. Two nights of swimming remain. The most prolific recordbreaker last night was Brenl Lewis (Spreydon), who achieved five new marks. His most meritorious effort was his win in the under-14 race over 110 yd breaststroke, when his time of Imin 31sec bettered the under-12 and under 13 records for the distance. Sixth Title Geoffrey Walker (Elmwood) won his sixth title of the meeting in the 220 yd junior boys’ freestyle, smashing L. Furness’s record and coming within o.9sec of Kindred’s senior mark. Gerrard's effort in the senior butterfly race inspired the local competitors. B. Ward, the runner-up, set a new centre record of Imin 9.7 sec, and B. M. Mustchin (Imin 10.4 sec) was in close attendance. A similar situation arose in the women’s 110 yd freestyle final. Miss J. Wright, who led Miss Shipston until just after half-way recorded

imin 6.6 sec to better the old centre mark as well.

The stylish J. C. Edmonds returned to competition with an impressive win in the men’s 110 yd breastroke championship, and the veteran in the field, M. J. M. Hay, was an excellent third. Among the younger swimmers, .he strongly-built West Coast boy, John Newton, won the under-13 title for 220 yd freestyle easily and the under--14 title for 440 yd freestyle in a close finish with Frank Murphy and Mark Lewis, both of whom broke the Canterbury record. Wharenui has now won 27 titles at the meeting followed by Elmwood 22. Spreydon 19, Sockburn Park 17, North Beach and Jellie Park three e-eh, and St Albans two.
