ASSAULT ON WIFE
(N.Z. Press Association) KAITAIA, January 23. The head keeper at Cape Regina Lighthouse, Ronald Sears, was convicted at Kaitaia today of assaulting his wife on January 19 and remanded in custody by Mr R. M. Grant, S.M., to appear at Kaikohe for sentence on January 25. Sears, aged 37, at first pleaded not guilty, but when his wife broke down in Court and said she would testify against him, an adjournment was taken, and Sears changed his plea to guilty. Sergeant B. J. Baker said Sears had been drinking and after an argument he grabbed his wife round the throat. She broke away and ran to the telephone, but he followed her, pulled the handpiece out and struck her with it, knocking her unconscious.
