APPEAL FOR MATERIAL
Mother Aubert Records The Sisters of Our Lady of Compassion, Island Bay, Wellington, are collecting and collating information on the life of their founder, Mother Mary Joseph Aubert. Mother Aubert, born in France in 1835, arrived at Auckland in 1860, and between 1871 and 1883 was a district nurse and school teacher in Hawke’s Bay. In 1883, Bishop Redwood asked Mother Aubert to work with the Maoris up the Wanganui, and from there, the Sisters of Compassion came to Wellington in 1899. Mother Aubert died in 1926. The order has eight houses in New Zealand, three in Australia, and one in Fiji. The sisters are preparing a biography of her and of the development of the congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion. Mother Aubert wrote many letters, and many of these have been preserved, but the sisters think that other letters and original material can be found. The sisters would be glad to receive letters or historical documents at Island Bay, and will, if the owners wish, have the material photocopied and returned.
