Children In Boats
Sir, —About two weeks ago there was a boating accident at a bay on Banks Peninsula when a small child was drowned. Today I had cause to wonder if only a personal tragedy will make some people think before risking children’s lives in boats. In the next bay we saw four adults embark on a fishing trip in a dinghy with an outboard motor, and with them they took four pre-school children—the youngest was only a toddler. My husband and I have tried previously to “life-save” our children while at a swimming pool, it was far from satisfactory although we had been taught life-saving during our school
days. My heart goes out to the children who are exposed to such risks and not to the irresponsible parents who will weep afterwards. Yours, etc., S.A.M. January 21, 1968.
