Traffic Islands

Sir,—-Whoever decided on traffic islands in Christchurch? The roads in general are not over-wide and there have been many accidents through these traffic islands. We were on our way to Timaru recently and in a suburban area of Christchurch we were almost forced up and on to the kerb by a big truck, although we were in the correct lane. When we tooted to the driver of the truck he looked surprised. I know of at least two people who have been killed at these islands, which, in my view, are not at all necessary. Some of them have been reduced in dimension; why not eliminate them altogether?—Yours, etc., SAFETY FIRST. January 17,1968.

[The traffic superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “The correspondent does not say which suburban road he considers should have the Traffic islands’ removed. In the area under this department’s control such ‘islands’ have proved their worth in segregating traffic and no fatal accidents have been recorded at them for the years 1964-65-66-67.”]
