Too Many Dunedin Teacher Candidates

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 22. The unusually large number of applicants for admission to the Dunedin Teachers’ College this year has forced a small number of unsuccessful candidates to apply for admission to the Ardmore Teachers’ College, Auckland.

The secretary-manager of the Otago Education Board (Mr W. A. J. Perry) said to day that the main reasons for refusing students with reasonable qualifications was the lack of accommodation and teaching space, but this problem should resolve itself soon because of the large amount of building being carried out at colleges throughout the country. Both the Ardmore and Hamilton Teachers’ Colleges had not yet completely filled their quota for the year, and had advised other education boards that they would consider taking a number of applicants from other areas. The quota for the Dunedin Teachers’ College is 280, and this year about 300 students have been accepted. Mr Perry said it was expected that a small number of trainees would leave during the year and the final admission would be about 290.
