Schoolboy Cricket Evenly Placed

The Australian secondary schools’ cricket team was fairly evenly placed after the first day of the final match of the tour, against a Canterbury secondary schools’ XI at Hagley Oval, yesterday.

Batting first on a wicket which gave the bowlers some encouragement, Canterbury . was all out for 141. Australia ' was 121 for seven wickets—still 20 runs behind with three ; wickets in hand. Canterbury was soon in trouble against D. Crow and D. Glassock, losing the first four wickets for 33. and five were down for 49. The St Andrew’s College captain, M. Fisher, batted well for 21, but it was not until J. Rosevear came to the wicket that solidify was shown among the Canterbury batsmen. He batted 90 minutes for 38. In the morning the Canterbury batsman, S. W. Cowles, suffered a broken left cheekbone when he was hit by a shortish ball from Glassock. Canterbury’s 100 came in 123 minutes and at lunch the score was 107 for seven wickets. Then B. Bhana and R. Hadlee each made 21.

Against accurate bowling by R. Hadlee and later by Fisher, Australia made little headway. P. Nankivell batted 105 minutes for 34 and the usually aggressive N. Coltman was restricted to 32 in 50 minutes. Australia was 105 for four about 5.10 p.m. but lost three more wickets for the addition of only 16 runs. Hadlee, Canterbury’s most penetrative bowler, worked hard in his 20 overs which yielded only 25 runs, but he was inclined to bowl wide of the off-stump.
