Climbing Record
mt uscar Loner ger. ot Arthur's Pass, became the oldest person to climb Mount Cook when, at the age of 66, he completed his second ascent of the mountain on January 11. He is believed to be at least 15 years older than any one else to reach the summit. He made the descent with a different party from that with which he climbed the 12.349 ft mountain. Starting from the Grand Plateau hut (7000 ft at 2 a.m., Mr Coberger reached the summit by way of the Linda Glacier and Zuerbriggen Shelf. He said
yesterday that the snow had been soft and the glacier breaking up. which had made the climb tiring. “The view was magnificent, and climbers on Mounts Dampier, Tasman and Si Iberhorn could be clearly seen,” he said. “1 started down at 9 a.m. and a westerly started down the Linda which made the snow very soft and the crevasse bridges somewhat shaky.” His first ascent was made more than 15 years ago, by the North Ridge. He. said he hoped to climb Mount Cook again next summer.
