Russia Against Open Tennis
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MOSCOW. The Soviet Union is “unwaveringly opposed” to open tennis, a spokesman for the Soviet Lawn Tennis Federation said yesterday. He said reports from New York that the Soviet federation planned to back Britain’s move in favour of open tournaments were quite wrong. “We are unwaveringly opposed to such tournaments, and our position on the subject is quite clear.” The Soviet federation plans to write to the British Lawn Tennis Association within the next few days setting out its objections to open tournaments and asking the L.T.A. “to change its minds and withdraw its decision,” the spokesman said.
