Some Successes In Linton, Wilson Cups

In spite of soaring temperatures, and disappointing performances In the morning, the Now Zealand Linton and Wilson junior tennis teams had a fairly successful day In Melbourne yesterday. D. A. Parun was beaten by D. Wright (Aust.), 2-6, 4-6, when his service and volleying let him down. The boys’ only victory in the Linton Cup games was by J. G. Simpson, who beat P. Campbell, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Simpson began nervously, but gained confidence to deserve his win. In the doubles, Parun and Simpson lost 10-12, 5-7, with only a service break being the difference in each leg. The New Zealand boys were defeated by Victoria, two matches to one. In the morning girls’ Wilson Cup matches, Miss R. Legge lost to the experienced Victorian, Miss B. Jenkins. Miss A. Stevens lost to Miss J. Young (Aust.), 3-6, 1-6. She played well, but the high temperatures and lack of experience soon told. In the- doubles Misses M. Pryde and Stevens lost to Misses B. Jenkins and K. Harris, 2-6, 1-6. In the afternoon, however, the Wilson Cup team played
with far more confidence, and had Its first win, by two matches to one. against South Australia. Miss Pryde lost to Mis, J. Gohl, 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 ' Miss Legge beat Miss H. O'Connor. 6-1, 6-8. 6-3. She played a very intelligent game, and although she was overhitting a little in the second set. proved most consistent. In the final match, the doubles, on which the rubber depended. Misses Stevens and Legge beat Miss Gohl and Hastings, 8-6, 3-6, 6-4, after displaying one of the finest doubles combinations by New Zealand girls on this season's circuit.
